Beach Phenomenon

22 Jun

Wavy hair, colorful t-shirts, salty skin, sitting around a fire, listening to the ocean, the smell of sea water. It’s summer, finally. And yes, there is no ocean anywhere around me, still I found a substitute for that.

Ganglians are a Sacramento band. So, obviously they know beaches and the ocean very well.I Heard an interview with them on the radio today. Very nice guys still rehearsing on their old gear.

I immediately felt like being on a holiday listening to their music. Floating away on a wave of easiness and bliss. Totally refreshed I listened to more of their stuff. I’m amazed.

I can truly recommend them to you if you’re into The Beach BoysMGMT and 70s guitar pop.

Ganglians so far released their album Monster Head Room in 2009. You can get in on Amazon.

Summer 2010 in my opinion definitely is linked to that whole bohemian, positive, enjoyable  scene.

And so are Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti. They, too have that vibe to them that hooks you up with wanting to dance and wanting to feel the sand run through your hands. It took Ariel Pink long enough to pass their enjoyment on to the people. Now songs like ‘Bright Lit Blue Skies’ are played in every club.

Ariel himself already started to make music and releasing his first tapes in 2002. By that time he was known as an avantgard musician, and from what I read came across as being pretty eccentric. And persistent. To the day the guy has released and re-released the proud number of 17 tapes and records. Chapeaux to that!

The album Before Today was released on 4AD on June, 8 2010.

So far those two are my favorite Beach Phenomenon participants. Musical summer 2010, bring it on.

George Harrison

Sunday, bloody Sunday. Out of all the days in the week (except from Mondays) I don’t know why but I never liked Sundays.

Germany still hasn’t gotten around to open up the shops on Sundays, so except from sitting around, maybe recover from the occasional Saturday night hangover there is nothing really that I do on a lazy Sunday. So I use that day, to sit around with a coffee and have a wander around the internet. Be it music, be it art, entertainment news, a new religion, whatever. As a friend of mine once said, “Life is what happens when people sit in front of the internet”. Now you might as well think that I’m a computer nerd, but no, I’m not. Well not more than any other twenty-something person anyway.

But yes, I confess I mostly look for music. I have a radio or speakers in every room in my apartment. I get up, I listen to music, I go out, I have my iPod, I go to bed I fall asleep listening to something.

I find new music everywhere, and of course old classics, too. This blog really was only created to share my findings.

So listen up.

This one I had almost forgotten about. GENIUS! I remember being a little kid listening to this song with my dad, sitting cross-legged in front of the record player. And I think I must’ve been 8 or 9 when I had a crush on George Harrison. To the day my favourite Beatle and one of my favourite guitar players.

He surely was great. There’s so many songs that we all know…but I never knew they were written by him:

Why don’t people use saxophones anymore? Sorry, mental leap. I could get all excited about George Harrison. He did so many totally different things, and in my head so far there isn’t one that I didn’t like.

One of the greatest bands ever. But I don’t wanna stop with a teary eye for today. So there’s one last thing to get you people started with a new week of chaos, laughter and hopefully hapiness.

Quote George Harrison:

Give me love, give me peace on earth, give me light, give me life, keep me free from birth, give me hope, help me cope, with this heavy load, trying to, touch and reach you with, heart and soul
